Worrying new report emerges on McDavid's contract talks with Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers most important item of business this offseason was re-signing Connor McDavid, but the two parties haven't even enhanced numbers yet.
His biggest point of reticence, per league sources, remains an aging roster, which he believes can contend again in 2025-26 but which doesn't look to be constructed to sustain a championship level over the long term.

Oilers and McDavid have yet to exchange numbers in contract discussions
According to another new update from insider Pierre LeBrun, the Oilers and McDavid have yet to even discuss the salary and terms of the contract. For the best player in the world, that's a significant topic.
Of course, the actual negotiations on the Oilers side won't be too contentious. Oilers ownership is happy to pay up any amount of money and term to keep McDavid in Edmonton.
With that in mind, it doesn't exactly inspire confidence that a new contract isn't done already. McDavid clearly believes the Oilers can win this season, but beyond is totally unknown with an aging core.
Maybe for McDavid personally entering the season without a contract won't be a distraction - but it will surely become one whether the Oilers like it or not. The best player in the NHL entering the season without a contract extension is news to all 31 other teams, and even fans are starting to give it to the Oilers.
Hopefully a deal is reached before the beginning of the regular season, otherwise, the noise around McDavid and the Oilers will crank up even more.
