The Edmonton Oilers will still have the salary cap space to add a new goaltender on waivers before the regular season.

While the Oilers do have the space and might get an opportunity to add a goalie, the team still may not take it. New insider reports revealed that the Oilers' locker room strongly wants to keep Calvin Pickard - and the team still believes in Stuart Skinner.

Oilers insider lays out plan for Edmonton to acquire promising goalie on waivers

The Boston Bruins are expected to place goaltender Michael DiPietro on waivers this season, and analysts have heavily linked him to the Oilers.
Analyst Jonathan Willis evaluated the Oilers salary situation, and found that Edmonton could claim DiPietro without making a trade to clear salary cap - only Mattias Janmark and Calvin Pickard would be sent to the AHL.
The 26 year old DiPietro is signed to a two-year contract at $812K per year, and has been arguably the best AHL goalie in the last two years. The Bruins are going to be forced to waive him with Jeremy Swayman and Joonas Korpisalo under contract.
With the Providence Bruins last year, DiPietro posted a .927 save percentage over 40 games, and has looked great in years past too. Signed for league minimum, many analysts believe DiPietro could take the step to become a full time NHLer.
If the Oilers would be willing to make the tough choice to demote 2 veteran players, they would be able to claim this young promising goaltender on a cheap deal. We'll see if the Oilers take the gamble, or stick with what they know.
