The Oilers released Jasper Weatherby, Brett Brochu, Connor Corcoran, Alex Konnak-Leipert, and Cameron Wright from their tryouts. The most notable of the releases is the 26 year old forward Weatherby, who has played NHL games and was signed on the day training camp began. All released players will report to the Bakersfield Condors, where they'll make the case to make the AHL team.
In addition, a number of prospects under team contracts have been cut from the training camp roster. Matvey Petrov, James Stefan, Jayden Grubbe, and Connor Ungar have been reassigned to the Condors as well. Matvey Petrov and James Stefan are two younger offensive prospects that some fans had high expectations for heading into camp, but both players underwhelmed in the rookie tournament and preseason.
These training camp cuts come at the same time as the Oilers are dropping the puck on another preseason game against the Winnipeg Jets. At this point, Coach Knoblauch has made it clear there's a competition for the bottom six forward group, and from now on preseason opportunities will go to players who have a chance to make the team. Tonight in Winnipeg, the Oilers are testing prospects Noah Philp and James Hamblin for a fourth line role.
The regular season opener is now just 14 days away, as the Oilers play the Winnipeg Jets at home. Over the next two weeks, Knoblauch and the Oilers will continue to carefully whittle down the training camp roster to their ideal combination for this season. With the goal of the Stanley Cup this year, every roster spot is going to matter for the Oilers.
