In a recent episode of Kyper and Bourne, Insider Jason Gregor revealed what the details might be on two of Edmonton's priority pending-free agents' contracts.
Insider shares knowledge of contract terms for two important Edmonton signings
Mattias Ekholm's is an important piece if the Oilers' defense, given the stability and balance he's brought to the blueline since coming over from Nashville three years ago, especially in the playoffs; locking-up his services is a priority for GM Stan Bowman.
However, Ekholm is currently 35 years old and given his age, signing a shorter-term deal allows both Ekholm to demonstrate his ability to stay healthy and perform at a high level, and the Oilers to reassess his long-term value.
«It's a contract year but I'm also getting up there (age)," Ekholm said during his media availability. "I know what I bring on the ice but I also have a family and I want to make sure we have security. Do I want to stay in Edmonton? Absolutely."
Another consideration for Mattias, that supports a shorter-term extension, is his health. Last season was marked with several injuries, the latest one causing him to miss nearly all of the first three rounds of the playoffs.
The other contract that Jason Gregor discussed on the show - and of course, Edmonton's top-priority - was McDavid's, which the Insider also believes will include a shorter term.
Given how close we are to the start of the season, even a short-term extension for McDavid will be perceived as a step in the right direction; it would give the Oilers and himself a few more years of contention for the Stanley Cup.
Having McDavid locked-up for even two more years would also provide the Oilers with a longer window to continue to improve on what is already of good team.
