Oilers insider hints roster move is coming for top prospect Matthew Savoie

Savoie has been firing on all cylinders in the AHL recently, putting together his offensive game and taking strides to become his team's best defensive forward too.

After the Oilers return from the 4 Nations Faceoff break, they'll only play 7 games before the NHL trade deadline on March 7th. That will be a critical stretch to evaluate all options for the team before playoffs, including Savoie.

Stauffer suggested that a call up could happen sooner than next season, perhaps just for that stretch before the deadline.

Earlier this season when noting the noticeable elevation in Savoie's game, Oilers analysts have suggested he could earn a call up for this stretch. His quality play lately has strengthened his case.

After playing for 4 different teams last season, and having his development hurt by COVID seasons, Savoie desperately needed some time in the AHL working on his game.

If the Oilers call up Savoie, they should be prepared to give him some opportunity to produce offence - preferably in the top six. He's an elite offensive talent that could pair well alongside Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl for years to come, if the Oilers manage him correctly.

Savoie being called up this season now seems like a matter of when, not if. Hopefully when the opportunity does game, he can prove to be an option in the playoffs this year if needed, and a piece for the future of the Oilers.
