«Well, the evaluation isn't something you do just once or twice and then it's over with. When I say that, it's not just looking at the goaltending we have, but also what's out there and options,» Bowman said. «So it's going to be a process that we're going to go through. I don't think we're going to come to one decision tomorrow or the next day. It's really about taking in the information, and eventually, we're going to settle on the thing that we think makes the most sense.»
Indeed, finding the right fit is a process. Yet, we're only weeks away from the start of training camp and no move has been made in net, whether to acquire a starting goalie, one that can play in tandem with
Stuart Skinner, or a goalie that can fill both of these aforementioned roles.
However, according to a recent report, Detroit goaltender Cam Talbot may be an Edmonton target, as either a replacement for
Calvin Pickard, or a solid backup to the Oilers' current goalie Tandem.
Detroit Red Wings have a solid goalie prospect in
Sebastian Cossa, their 15th overall draft pick in 2021, and may prefer to use the young goalie ahead of Cam Talbot, and then trade Cam for assets.
The proposal would potentially cost Edmonton goalie
James Hamblin, and a 2027 3rd-round draft pick.
Given Cam Talbot has already played with the Oilers, his transition into the organization would be a smooth one. The 2-time All-Star, in fact, set an Oilers franchise record in 2016-17, when he recorded 42 wins in 77 games played. That year, his GAA was 2.39 and SV% 9.19, well above the league average.
With Detroit last season, Talbot posted a record of 21 W, 19 L, 5 OTL in 47 games played, with a 2.93 GAA and .901 SV%. The last two stats are well above what the Oilers' goalies posted last season - Talbot would be a definite upgrade.
However, Stan Bowman may decide to do nothing.
«Part of the evaluation is the guys that we have, and if it makes the most sense to keep this group, that's certainly a possibility. So I don't know. We're not at the point where we're saying we're definitely bringing in new goalies.»
