According to Insider Bob Stauffer, Stan Bowman is quite willing to trade the Oilers' first-round pick in 2027; however, there is much to learn about this team first, before a trade can be considered.
Likeliest upgrade will be in goal, or scoring-depth
Only three games into the campaign and we've heard both criticisms and praise for Edmonton's goalies, despite the team getting off to a good start with a record of 2-0-1.
Yet, a good general manager will consider all possibilities for his team, whether it's winning, or losing. If anything, the Edmonton Oilers are likely to explore trades for a goaltender and potentially a scoring winger during the 2025-26 season.
According to The Hockey News, insiders predict a change in the crease is inevitable, though it would be closer to the tradeline, when a goalie is likely to become available from a non-playoff team.
A strong starting goalie is considered a crucial missing piece for a deep playoff run. Both Skinner and Pickard will be unrestricted free agents (UFAs) at the end of the season, another factor that Stan Bowman must consider.
The Oilers might also look to add to their top-six forward group, especially if some of their younger players, or recent signings don't perform to expectations. Already, there has been talk of Howard going to Bakersfield for further development.
If young players like Howard struggle to secure a spot, or if there's a logjam at certain positions, it could also open up trade possibilities. To improve its playoff odds, the Oilers will need to make a trade at some point and avoid a third-straight disappointment in the post-season.
There have also been reports of interest in
Alex Tuch, if the Buffalo Sabres continue to struggle and he becomes available, according to
Heavy Sports.
The Oilers have been predicted to have over 104.5 points this season and are expected to continue having a strong start, which could influence their trade decisions, including the return of
Zach Hyman and Mattias Janmark from injury.
Competition will be fierce up and down the lineup, potentially leaving two or three players out in the cold. Together with the 2027 1st-round pick, Stan Bowman could package these assets into a trade deal for
Adrian Kempe, whose name has also surfaced of late in trade reports.
Over the last few years the Oilers have dealt its 1st round pick to acquire
Mattias Ekholm,
Jake Walman and Ike Howard, moves that have strengthened the lineup. Expect Stan Bowman to do the same this year.
