Oilers defenceman claimed off waivers finally set to make team debut this year

Oilers defenceman Alec Regula has been ranked as the team's 4th best prospect, and will very likely make his team-debut this season.
The Edmonton Oilers claimed Alec Regula off waivers from the Boston Bruins in December of 2024, but he missed the rest of the season dealing with a knee injury. Now he's healthy, and can finally show the Oilers what he can do.

In ranking Regula the 4th best prospect, analysts at the Cult of Hockey are extremely high on his prospects as an NHL player - just like Stan Bowman is.
Referencing a discussion between insider Bob Stauffer and prospect expert Bruce Curlock, both agreed that Regula's skills have him primed to make the jump back to the NHL this year.

CURLOCK: Regula to me is a tweener type of player. He could play in a 6/7 role if the skating develops, but he could also be a very good first-pairing defenceman in the AHL. His game has some similarities to Cody Ceci: a big body, right-shot defenceman with skating issues who can lack a physical edge to his game. However, Regula is a better passer than Ceci and he has some good offensive instincts

Now 25 years old, Regula was drafted in the 3rd round by the Detroit Red Wings in 2018, and has spent time with the Blackhawks and Bruins organizations - even playing 22 NHL games with the Hawks.
After missing all last year with injury, starting in the AHL makes sense for Regula. However, if he can make a good impression, he'll be among the first call-up candidates for the Oilers next year.
