Top Oilers goalie prospect Olivier Rodrigue made his NHL debut with the team last night, and Coach Knoblauch's specific praise of the young goalie is very interesting compared to Stuart Skinner.
Oilers coach highlights Rodrigue strengths that are Skinner's weaknesses
When asked about Rodrigue's performance last night, Coach Knoblauch specifically mentioned the rookie goalie's rebound control and agility as impressive.
He made a lot of good saves. He looked engaged, the rebound control was good, his agility to make really big saves. It was nice to see him. It would've been nice to see him have an easy period, but he was tested with some big ones. It was nice.
- Coach Knoblauch
Rodrigue did allow one goal in the period, but otherwise made and impressive saves in his NHL debut - his lateral movement on some saves was truly impressive.
While Skinner is ranking at the bottom of the league in these advanced stats, Rodrigue looked to be very strong in these specific areas. Rodrigue hasn't had a strong season in the AHL after numerous good years, and the one real concern about him at the NHL is his smaller stature at only 6'1.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the Oilers will give a longer run to Rodrigue in net.
Calvin Pickard is expected to start the next two games, and Skinner is only considered to be day to day.
It was a failure for management not to address the weakness in goaltending this season, but the Oilers will still have a chance at the cup with their current tandem. Hopefully when Skinner returns from injury, he can find a way to elevate his game.
