NHL insider says Oilers are expected to get no return for Mangiapane in trade
According to a new update from NHL insider Frank Seravalli, the Oilers won't be getting anything return for Mangiapane in trade, but they will likely be able to clear his contract without any salary retention.
At this point, clearing Mangiapane's entire $3.6M salary would be a win for the Oilers - and a necessary move for their current roster construction.
After recalling both Hutson and Howard, and still needing to activate Kapanen and Walman from LTIR, the Oilers need to clear some significant cap space. It can only be done temporarily by placing Jarry on LTIR, or trading Mangiapane.
Mangiapane just hasn't been a good fit in Edmonton, and has now found himself dropping to the 4th line - and the Oilers just can't afford to spend another $3.6M on their bottom line. He's got just 11 points through 40 games.
Now that the Oilers have already made the roster moves to add Hutson and Howard, it's possible that a Mangiapane trade isn't far behind.
If the Oilers can find another team to take his entire contract on and not pay to incentive a taker, it will be a win for the team at this point.
