NHL analyst makes absurd claim on Connor McDavid's next Oilers contract

Connor McDavid will be up for a contract extension at the end of this season, and one prominent NHL analyst is wrongfully pedalling the theory that the Oilers captain is done taking discounts for Edmonton.
Earlier this season in a very rare interview about his contract status, McDavid shot down the idea that he would fully maximize his earnings - meaning he would take below market value.
NHL analyst absurdly claims Connor McDavid will demand $20M in salary on his next contract
With the salary cap rising over $100 million, McDavid could command $20 million, or even a little more, when his deal expires after the 2025-26 season.
- Ken Campbell
The NHL salary cap will increase to $104M the year that McDavid's extension will kick in, giving him a maximum annual value of $20.8M, or 20% of the full salary cap.
"I feel like I set the market a long time ago. That held for a long time. The cap was pretty stagnant there for a while My priority is to win. My priority is to take care of my family. Those are the two things that I worry about."
- Connor McDavid
It's pretty clear from this quote that McDavid isn't interested in pursuing the maximum salary of $20.8M. That's not to say that he's taking a discount, but that he has different priorities than just salary.
How much is Connor McDavid's next contract expected to be?
That would put McDavid's next salary between the range of $16.64 and $17.68M. With a rising cap, he could certainly take the upper echelon of that estimate.
However, it's extremely unlikely that McDavid will take Ken Campbell's suggestion and demand the maximum salary of $20.8M. The Oilers captain knows that other factors affect his next contract beyond just salary. It looks impossible that he would take the maximum over $20M.
