The Oilers are planning to use this combination for their first line on opening night, and they'll need the time to develop the chemistry to have a much-needed hot start.
While it is just preseason, the new first line with Frederic didn't have instant chemistry. Frederic rated last in GameScore Impact, but both McDavid and Draisaitl were down too.
The Oilers need Frederic to essentially play the role of
Zach Hyman while he's out with injury until November. Frederic needs to play hard in the forecheck, around the net front, and look to finish his chances in tight.
Coach Knoblauch acknowledged it wasn't the best start for the new first line, but did commend Frederic for good efforts on what was asked of him.
If you look at the stat line it doesn't look very good. But they spent a lot of time in the offensive zone and Frederic was doing what he was supposed to be doing - he was around the net, he made some plays on the half wall.

As long as McDavid is unsigned, the Oilers success on the ice will be critical to the organization. They need the first line to immediately click for Game 1 of this season to avoid another slow start, and to show McDavid the future is bright for the team.
