New Oilers defenceman Atro Leppanen is making a surprise push for the NHL roster straight out of training camp with his quality play.
The Oilers signed the 26 year old Finnish defenceman earlier this year after he led his European league in scoring. The smooth skating defender clearly has offensive skill, but most analysts expected him to start the season in the AHL to adjust to North America - until they saw him in preseason.

Now, some Oilers analysts are believing he could be a candidate to make the NHL roster for opening night.
While there are still concerns about Leppanen's defensive zone play, his puck moving skills and offensive abilities have caught the attention of anyone watching Oilers preseason games this year.
In his first two games Leppanen has been noticeable making excelling breakout passes and set-up plays in the offensive zone.
Last year, the Oilers acquired
John Klingberg and used him in key scenarios because of their belief his offensive skills could unlock more from their roster. Leppanen looks to be a similar player, which could give the Oilers more reason to trust him.
It will still be a surprise if Leppanen cracks the Oilers' deep defensive group to start the season, but his impressive play this preseason won't be ignored. He should be an option to play games for the Oilers this year though, even if he doesn't make the opening night roster.
