McDavid's agent may have issued him a warning over Oilers contract negotiations

Connor McDavid has yet to re-sign with the Edmonton Oilers, which has caused a slew of rumours surrounding the team's Captain - something his agent may have warned him about.
Throughout this offseason, outlets from around the NHL have speculated about McDavid leaving the Oilers via trade or free agency. It's understandable when the best player is up for a contract, but the most connected insiders believes McDavid staying is a certainty.

Despite the reports of Oilers insiders, NHL outlets have run wild with speculation linking McDavid to Los Angeles Kings, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the New York Rangers.
In a new piece for the Edmonton Journal, analyst Kurt Leavins revealed he believes McDavid's agent would have warned him that putting off negotiations this long will stir up this sort of unwanted attention.
Connor McDavid is more than entitled to dictate the timing of his decision on a possible extension. But while I 100% defend the player's rights in situations like that, it also opens the door to some of the wild speculation you have probably read the past few weeks, from a trade to L.A. to how his «best days may be behind him». You might write that in stuff August when there is nothing else to print. One assumes his agent warned him of that side-effect.

Again, it is newsworthy to the rest of the NHL if there's even a possibility McDavjd becomes available. Every big market team will be lining up for even the slightest chance.
But this is only a story as long as Connor McDavid remains unsigned for next season. For now it's just unwanted attention and a minor annoyance to fans, but if McDavid isn't signed by training camp, the noise will only get louder.
Hopefully the Oilers can find a way to get McDavid signed as soon as possible, and out all the rumours around the NHL to bed for good.
