Former Oiler defenseman competes for lineup on NHL roster

Matt Benning, who played 4 seasons with the Oilers, hopes to compete for a spot on the Leafs' roster at the upcoming training camp.
At 31-years old, Matt still believes he has the ability to compete at an NHL level.
«I still think I'm an NHL defenseman," Matt was quoted saying in the Edmonton Journal. "I didn't get a chance for a call-up (with the Leafs last year) but their D core is really good. I don't blame them"

Matt Benning comes from a family of NHL defenseman, and has learned to remain patient and take advantage of opportunities, when they're given. His father Brian played on five teams, including the Oilers, and his uncle Jim is the current GM of the Vancouver Canucks.
Matt was drafted 195th overall by Boston, but found his way to the Edmonton Oilers, where he signed a 2-year entry-level deal as a free agent. Following two years in Bakersfield, he got his shot with the Oilers, and debuted against the Leafs on November 1, 2016.
In 2024, Benning was traded to the Leafs for Timothy Liljegren, and was sent to the AHL to play for the Marlies, where he remained for an extended period of time.
Yet, one never knows the trajectory a career will take. Now, Matt has the chance to play on an NHL roster again, though he will be competing on Leafs team deep on defense.
At 31 years-old, Matt Benning faces the very real possibility that may not crack the Leafs' lineup, in which case he'll be sent back to the minors.
Matt has played in 464 NHL games, the second most of any player drafted in the 6th round of his draft class. Only Connor Brown has played more games at 601.
He's played long enough to know that anything can happen, if you're in the right place at the right time.
