According to an Insider report, the Edmonton Oilers should put a freeze on their 2025-26 training camp invitees because of an overflow of players, both in the forward position, and on defense.

An overflow of bodies may have Oilers considering a training camp freeze
All considered, the idea of not inviting PTO in areas where there is an abundance of bodies is a prudent one. With the addition of several young prospects, head coach Kris Knoblauch will have his work cut out for him as he'll attempt to narrow the competition to an opening-day roster.
The same cannot be said, however, for the goalie position. Instability in net has analysts across the league wondering when GM Stan Bowman will make a move. Inviting free UFAs Ilya Samsonov and Alexander Georgiev could be the answer if one, or both, should prove to be an upgrade.
It should indeed be interesting to watch those players mentioned in the above social media posting, who will be attending the pre-season camp.
Twenty-two year old Viljami Marjala, who signed with the Oilers as a free agent in June, 2025, recorded decent numbers playing in Finland in 2024-25. In 54 games, he scored 8G and 44A.
Josh Samanski is a 23-year old undrafted center, who signed with Edmonton in April, 2025. Last season with the Stromberg Tigers of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga, he recorded 14G and 26A in 52 games.
Of the many left-side defense that will be attending camp, Atro Leppanen should be interesting to note for his offensive abilities. In 2024-25, he recorded 63 points in 60 games played. He signed with the Oilers in April, 2025.
Cam Dineen is the other left-side defenseman to watch for. He was traded to Edmonton from Arizona in March, 2023. With the Condors last season, he posted 9G and 34A in 59 games. He also played 4 games with the Oilers last season.
How the Oilers approach their upcoming training camp will be known soon enough, as it is set to begin in mid-September.
