Oilers trade connection to elite young goalie grows stronger after new insider report

The Oilers clearly have a need to upgrade their goaltending position after disappointing playoffs results two years straight for Stuart Skinner. Edmonton needs a solution in their crease, but doesn't have the salary cap space to add a proven veteran starter.

According to a new report from NHL insider Cam Robinson of Elite Prospects on the Sekeres and Price Show, the Oilers initially asked the Red Wings about the availability of goalie Trey Augustine. The Oilers may not be able to complete that trade, but it hints at interest in Sebastian Cossa.

Red Wings goalie prospect Trey Augustine has recently shot up prospect rankings to overtake the older Sebastian Cossa, and Augustine is considered to be close to NHL ready - which has left Cossa in the dust.

Behind John Gibson, Cam Talbot, and Trey Augustine, Cossa now has a hard path to the NHL. It's very possible the Red Wings make the 22 year old goalie available in trade, which should interest the Oilers.

A few weeks ago, insider Bob Stauffer appeared to hint the Oilers could have interest in Sebastian Cosss - who also played in junior for the Edmonton Oil Kings.

Drafted 15th overall by the Red Wings in 2021, Cossa has been stellar in the AHL since his arrival and is no slouch of a goalie prospect himself. Also standing at 6'6, he has the coveted size of an elite goalie.

If the Oilers believe Cossa is NHL ready and could be an emerging star goaltender, trading for him now on an entry level contract could turn out to be a steal of a deal for the Oilers - and the goalie of the future in Edmonton.
