The Edmonton Journal recently posted an article that focuses on the Oilers' most over-rated players; defenseman that are still playing in the NHL, and who were once thought by Edmonton fans to be saviors.
They were highly-rated, and thought to be the next player up to solidify the d-core, whether because of modern-era hockey analytics, or strong junior careers.
Yet, none would find success in Edmonton; fans blamed the organization for their personal lack of success, though in hindsight, the Oilers were justified in moving-on from them, as none would realize their potential as top-4 D-men, and jumped from team to team on short-term deals.
Yet, of all these players, right-handed defenseman Vincent Desharnais is perhaps the only one the Oilers should consider resigning. His 'old-school' style of play endeared him to fans, and helped the Oilers advance to the 2023-24 Stanley Cup Finals.
Though Vincent's statistics don't overwhelm, it's his physical and aggressive style of play that makes him effective. At 6'7", his length is useful in net-front scrums, in particular during the playoffs, where time and space is limited.
Desharnais is in year 2 of a 2 year contract with the Canucks, at an AAV of $2M; it's perhaps more than the Oilers would like to pay for his services, though given its pressing need on the right side, Stan Bowman could find a way to make it work.
The 29-year old defenseman was once thought highly by fans and management alike. Perhaps it can be the case once more. Defenseman typically take longer to develop. With only 5-years of NHL experience, he may just be maturing into exactly the type of player Edmonton needs.
