Walking the tightrope of the NHL salary cap is a difficult task for contending teams, and now the Oilers have been named as one of 11 teams who will carry overage charges next year.

The Oilers haven't been the most adept organization in the past with the salary cap, so this year's penalties were actually far below those of last season.

PuckPedia announces Oilers as one of 11 teams carry salary cap overage charges into next season

According to PuckPedia, the Oilers will enter next season with $150,000 in overage charges from player bonuses. However, Corey Perry's contract will enact $50K more if the Oilers win the second round, and another $50K in the third round.
All in, the Oilers salary cap overage penalties for next season could only be a max of $250K - a fairly minimal number. The St. Louis Blues are far ahead this year, with $2.153M in overage charges.
PuckPedia also pointed out that the Oilers have previously led the NHL in these bonus overages. Last season, the Oilers paid $3.45M in bonus overages, most due to Connor Brown's three million dollar bonus for playing only ten games.
The St. Louis Blues will carry the league's largest bonus overage into 2025-26 at $2.153 million - though that's still below last season's high mark of $3.45 million, set by the Edmonton Oilers.

It's a positive sign to see the Oilers come in relatively low on the list and impact of cap penalties this season, as they surely haven't managed it well in the past. The Connor Brown contract bonus really was a monstrosity.
The Oilers will get off the hook for some dead salary cap this year as well - with James Neal's $1.92M finally coming off the books. Jack Campbell's buyout for his contract will be on the books next year for $2.3M.
Hopefully the Oilers, under their new management, can be better managers of the salary cap heading into the future.
