Though they are two very different players from different generations, Connor McDavid and Wayne Gretzky are very much alike in one exceptional way: the hardware that each has won.
While both are generational talents, comparing them is challenging because of the eras in which each has dominated. Of course, Gretzky remains the undisputed GOAT point producer with unmatched career totals.
McDavid and Gretzky only players in NHL history to share unique blend of Trophies
McDavid exhibits a unique combination of speed, skill, and playmaking that has him on a similar historic trajectory as Gretzky, setting records like his Connor's 34 assists in a single playoff run.
McDavid has reached milestones at a faster rate than any player except Gretzky, making him the fourth-fastest to 1,000 points and a strong contender to become the second player to reach 2,000 career points.
The only active players to have more points that have an outside chance of reaching 2K are
Sidney Crosby (1687) and Alex Ovechkin (1623), but given the late-stage of their careers, it is unlikely they will reach the milestone.
Leon Draisaitl (956 points) could conceivably reach 2000 points, which would be incredible given his career with the Oilers.
So, despite all the differences in their styles, Connor McDavid and Wayne Gretzky are the only two players in NHL history to win the following awards:
5 Art Ross Trophies
A Conn Smythe Trophy
3 Hart Memorial Trophies
4 Ted Lindsay Award
Noticeably absent from Connor's list of awards is a Stanley Cup, something the superstar will be set to remedy in October, when the puck drops on the 2025-26 NHL season.
