Earlier this morning, the Carolina Hurricanes made a move to address their shaky goaltending situation. After losing Frederik Andersen to injury, and waiving Antti Raanta yesterday after his recent struggles, the Hurricanes have signed Aaron Dell to a tryout contract.
Earlier this month, the Hurricanes tried another veteran goalie, Jaroslav Halak, on a PTO as well. It didn't produce a contract, but Dell has had more recent success in the NHL than Halak has. Just a few days ago, Dell was spotted getting into game shape with San Jose Sharks legends Joe Thornton and Logan Couture.
Dell, now 34 years old, has played 130 NHL games since debuting in the 2016-17 season. He's spent most of his time with the San Jose Sharks, and also short stints in the Devils, Sabres, and Leafs organization.
Clearly, the Edmonton Oilers are also toiling in the goaltending position, and haven't even made an attempt as small as a PTO to address their needs. Instead, Jack Campbell is still struggling greatly in the minor leagues, and Stuart Skinner is being tasked with the Herculean task of playing almost every game. Even a PTO signing like this could've significantly helped Edmonton, taking the toll off Skinner, and hopefully able to get better performances out of all goalies.
