The Vancouver Canucks are currently all-in. About a month ago, they traded for Elis Lindholm, making an interchangeable one-two center combo with Pettersson and Lindhom. Since that worked out so well, why not go after a top winger when you need one?
According to NHL Insider Rick Dhaliwal, the Canucks are deeply interested in Penguins LW Jake Guentzel. However, it'll probably take a first and second round pick and a prospect. Also, he'll probably want a $8-9 million contract extension.
As for the price, it's a little steep. But it's going to take a lot for Pittsburgh to part with someone like him. Vancouver has the assets ready to make a fair offer for Guentzel, but they may be weary to do so because of team control. Re-signing Lindholm, Pettersson, and Guentzel in the same year just isn't possible, even though it'll add to a LW core that doesn't have a certified first liner.
If the Vancouver Canucks do indeed pony up the offer required to land Guentzel, they'll be going all-in on winning the Stanley Cup this season. If they truly believe they won't be able to re-sign Elias Pettersson, maybe it's the right move to do so.
