After losing the Stanley Cup Final two year in a row, Connor McDavid is taking his drive to win the Stanley Cup to the next level.

Reports have surfaced in the last few weeks that McDavid may not sign a contract extension before the beginning of the regular season - and now the Captain himself has confirmed it. McDavid is closely watching the Oilers' moves to help them contend for a cup this year and beyond.

Connor McDavid had extreme reaction to Game 6 loss vs Panthers

All NHL fans saw McDavid's 'dig in' speech in the 2024 Cup Final, but this year there was almost no video released.
However, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed on 32 Thoughts that McDavid has become even more fanatical about winning and the Oilers' roster after their second loss.
Connor McDavid, I've been told now by several people in the aftermath of that defeat, has become even more fanatical about winning. All he cares about was winning. Now he's in another stratosphere about it.

He thinks this team can win now, but he's not convinced that if he signs for any kind of term, three to five years from now, that he believes the team has staying power.

The two losses have angered him, and disappointed him, and pained him so much, that he will not allow himself to be put into a situation where he doesn't think he's capable of winning. So he's put the Oilers on notice.

When someone asks me what this is all about: it's two losses in the finals, and he can't freaking stand it. It makes him crazy.

- Elliotte Friedman

McDavid has stressed his belief in the Oilers roster recently, but has specifically mentioned only the upcoming season.
Beyond next year many core Oilers will begin to reach the final years of their careers. Zach Hyman, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Mattias Ekholm, and more are now creeping towards their mid 30s.
The Oilers desperately need to continue to reshape their team this season to extend their cup-contention window, and prove to McDavid that Edmonton can compete beyond just next year.
