Team Canada will have to name new Captain, one leader emerges from the group

Sidney Crosby went down with injury in Canada’s game against Czechia, and it didn’t look good. He was unable to return to the game, Canada was unable to provide any updates, and one sports doctor is fearful that his tournament may be over.

Speaking to media today, Coach Jon Cooper expressed some optimism by not ruling out Crosby for the rest of the tournament. For now, they’re taking the injury as day-to-day as they await medical imaging that will be confirmed tomorrow.

However, Olympic rules state that a Team Captain must be dressed for every game. If Crosby misses even one game, Canada will need to name a new Captain.

Every fan in hockey knows who would be next up to take on the leadership role for Team Canada. It’s Connor McDavid.

At today’s Team Canada practice, McDavid was first on the ice to lead the group out. He has incredible experience as a leader, being the youngest team captain in NHL history. And of course, he’s Canada’s best player.

Crosby missed practice today, and Nathan MacKinnon did too - who’s visibly been fighting through an injury after their game against France.

After scoring the 4 Nations winning goal too, McDavid has emerged as the clear leader to take on the Captaincy in the absence of Sidney Crosby. It’s nearly a consensus among fans and NHL insiders, although Nathan MacKinnon may also be in the conversation.

Team Canada will primarily be hoping that Crosby is able to return to play and continue leading their Olympic squad. But if it comes down to it and Crosby is unable to play, there’s no better pick to take on the key leadership role than Connor McDavid.
