It was the worst news any GM can get and it happened to Pens GM and President Kyle Dubas. With the hope the team could make an extension work, it was revealed by 32 Thoughts Podcaster and Sportsnet NHL insider Elliotte Friedman that their prized UFA winger Jake Guentzel will be heading to market.
This is not the news that Dubas had hoped for, but the newly minted GM has allowed Guentzel to reach out to teams of his choosing to work on a contract extension. This quality of player will be highly sought by many teams including the Edmonton Oilers.
In the same report, Friedman mentioned that Guentzel is the Oilers top target going into the deadline, and they'd really like to find a way for this to work.
Guentzel is having a great season with 50 games played, with 22 goals, 30 assists for 52 points. He's a free agent at the end of this season, and he currently carries a $6M cap hit.
