The Edmonton Oilers could consider former Stanley Cup Champion goaltender Matt Murray to run in a tandem alongside Stuart Skinner next season.

The Oilers may have some solid options to pick up a goaltender on waivers this season, and Matt Murray could be one of them. Insiders have previously listed Bruins goalie Michael DiPietro and Devils goalie Nico Daws as options too.

Oilers analyst links Edmonton to acquiring Matt Murray from Seattle Kraken

Oilers analyst Jonathan Willis recently took a look at the available candidates, including DiPietro and Daws, and instead surprisingly raised Matt Murray as a potential fit for Edmonton.
Murray the Greater is fun, if unlikely; if Edmonton wanted him as a backup they could presumably have signed him in free agency. Injuries have derailed his career, and every time a Sam Bennett-type streaks toward the crease the question will be if it ends in a concussion.

That being said, he's been an awfully good starting goalie in the world's best league, he's only 31 and his recent AHL results look a lot like the ones he posted right before he became a Stanley Cup-winning No. 1. Is it crazy to imagine him splitting time with Skinner?

While acquiring Murray in trade or waivers may be unlikely after signing in Seattle, it's still not impossible given that he's considered their third goaltender.
Taking a bet on a goaltender like DiPietro or Daws may be the best option - but there's still some risk in taking on an unproven goalie. Murray has struggled in recent years, but he's the one with the most NHL experience by far, including 2 Stanley Cup wins.
Hip injuries entirely derailed the last 2 years of Murray's career, limiting him to only 27 games in the last two seasons. His last season of significant playing time came with the Leafs in 2022-23, posting a .903 save percentage in 23 games. Last year, he even got into one playoff game for Toronto.
Murray played for Toronto's AHL team last season, and posted incredible results - a .934 save percentage in 21 games.
Still just 31 years old, maybe there's still some game left in Matt Murray. Injuries will always be a concern, but perhaps if he has a strong start with Seattle and becomes available for trade, the Oilers will look at the cheap Cup Champion veteran.
