Controversy has sparked about NHL referees after the Edmonton Oilers scored a power play goal with Jets defenceman Dylan Samberg down on the ice writhing in pain.

It was a truly ugly scene as the Oilers passed the puck in circles around a clearly shorthanded Jets team. Samberg was literally rolling on the ice in pain while the Oilers kept pushing, and the referees allowed play to continue until they scored.

Dylan Samberg out with serious injury after shot block on penalty kill

Samberg fully layed out to make a shot block off McDavid, and immediately dropped to the ice afterward. His teammates came to check on him quickly, and Samberg was assisted off the ice.
It seems to be a serious injury to Samberg based on his incredibly tough reputation as a defender.
Jets reporters have even relayed a story that Samberg completed a hike on a broken foot, so he wasn't just writing on the ice with a stinger.
While the Jets fans in Winnipeg were booing loudly, and fans on social media voiced harsh opinions towards the referees for allowing play to continue, it was absolutely the right call.

Jets fans react to Oilers powerplay goal with Samberg down

The Oilers had a possession and an opportunity to score, and NHL rules don't allow referees to stop play in that situation. It was still an ugly sight to see, and Jets fans are up in arms about it.
Samberg is also an incredibly important defenceman to the Jets, and losing him just before the playoffs with a bone break from this shot block would be a devastating injury.
Hopefully, Samberg can make a quick return - but this ugly powerplay goal will definitely continue to stir some debate among hockey fans.
