Connor McDavid bluntly shot down any ideas of him assuming the role of captain on team Canada, saying it will undoubtedly be Sidney Crosby. However, it prompted more discussion from NHL insiders about who actually will be Captain.
According to Chris Johnston on TSN's Insider Trading tonight, Team Canada will decide on their captain when the full roster is announced in December of this year.
Johnston also hinted that the rest of the leadership group, the assistant captains, will likely be the six players already named to the roster: Connor McDavid, Brad Marchand, Nathan Mackinnon, Cale Makar, and Brayden Point.
If Connor McDavid is instantly saying the captain should be Sidney Crosby, then it simply should be Sidney Crosby. At 37 years old, Crosby is still the face of hockey and an elite player with the championship pedigree that Canada needs, as well as the international experience. There will be plenty of time later in McDavid's career to be captain of Canada, as long as the NHL stay in international hockey.
The Four Nations Faceoff is a flawed tournament for not being truly best on best international hockey, but it's a decent warm up for players and fans for the return to the Olympics in 2025. International hockey is long overdue, and it's great to see it begin to return.
