Iconic coach Don Cherry tears apart referees for Oilers vs Panthers Game 2
Don Cherry has been backing the Oilers consistently through the playoffs, and before the Cup Final solidified them as his pick to win Lord Stanley in 7 games.
Don Cherry rips apart referees for poorly called Game 2 of Stanley Cup Final
On the most
recent edition of the Grapevine Podcast, Cherry went after the referees for major misses of multiple penalty calls, including moments just before the first and last goals by the Panthers.
DON CHERRY: That was the worst refereed game I think I ever saw. It was that one. It was unbelievable.
TIM CHERRY: I think Florida should have won that game, but the two goals they got (the first and the last) shouldn't have counted, I don't think.
Both Don and his son Tim agreed that the referees impacted the game by failing to call penalties against the Panthers that ended up becoming goals.
The second missed call was on the final goal, where the puck came nearby the Panthers bench during a change, and they impeded the path of the puck. It's textbook too many men, and yet somehow wasn't called - then the Panthers scored the game winner.
When Don Cherry is incensed enough to call it one of the worst refereed games he's seen in his 91 years, it must really be a brutal game. On these tow critical plays in particular, Cherry is right that the referees failed to do their job.
