The Oilers have been connected to the Detroit Red Wings in trade rumours for one of their young goalie prospects, but Edmonton won't have much to give up.

Several NHL insiders have hinted the Oilers have had discussions about Sebastian Cossa as a trade target. The 21 year old former first round draft pick looks NHL ready, but has fallen to 4th on their depth chart.

What would the Edmonton Oilers have to trade for Sebastian Cossa?

The Red Wings have a clear surplus of goaltending with John Gibson, Cam Talbot, Trey Augustine, and Sebastian Cossa which should make them receptive to a move. The Oilers don't have much cap space, and would be most interested in the cheap rookie goalies.
Analysts at Heavy.com have speculated that the biggest obstacle to a deal could be a weak offer from the Oilers. Simply put, they don't have much that may entice the Red Wings.
The biggest roadblock in the way of a Cossa trade is the return price. The Oilers land among the weaker prospect pools in the NHL.

They do have their 2027 and 2028 first round picks. Still, it remains to be seen if Yzerman is interested in acquiring more draft picks. After all, the Red Wings haven't made the playoffs in nine years.

The Oilers have some enticing prospects like Maxim Beryozkin and Beau Akey, but that's practically it for feature players in the list. It's hard to imagine the Oilers would be willing to part with Ike Howard or Matthew Savoie after just acquiring them.
Perhaps the Oilers may also have to attach NHL-ready players. Some candidates could be Brett Kulak or Vasily Podkolzin, but again, that alone won't be enough for a deal.
It's possible the Oilers may have to give up a combination of an NHL ready player, a top end prospect, and draft picks to persuade the Red Wings into trading Cossa. The Oilers could put together an offer, but it'd carry significant risk if Cossa doesn't pan out in the NHL.
The Oilers surely need to find a way to address their goaltending before next playoffs. Cossa could potentially be an option, but if they can't swing a trade, they'll need to look elsewhere.
