The Tkachuk brothers have been heavily in the news after Matthew’s harsh chirp toward Leon Draisaitl, sparking a debate on whether both brothers would even make Team Canada’s roster.
Matthew Tkachuk’s chirp of “always the bridesmaid” toward Draisaitl went viral across the sports world, but it’s also brought about some criticism towards his style of play and leadership.
Judging by Drew Doughty’s comments, it’s clear he doesn’t think Matt Tkachuk could make the cut for Canada.
NHL fans debate if Tkachuk brothers would both make Team Canada’s roster
The entire incident has sparked debate about whether both Tkachuk brothers would make Canada’s roster. Most hockey fans do recognize the value of what they bring to the ice, but cracking Canada’s elite squad is hard to do. Fans are split on the question entirely.
Realistically, Matthew Tkachuk would be a lock for Team Canada. He’s got multiple 100 point seasons, Stanley Cup experience, and plays hard.
Considering positions, skills, and role utility, Matthew Tkachuk would likely be able to supplant Brandon Hagel, Nick Suzuki, Sam Bennett, or Seth Jarvis on Canada’s roster.
Brady on the other hand doesn’t have the NHL offensive numbers or playoff experience to make a case to make Canada’s roster on merit. Matthew ranks as the 19th most effective players in the tournament, but Brady isn’t on the list of the top 40.
One Canadian might even believe that Matthew wouldn’t crack their roster. Comments from Drew Doughty over the years have surfaced that suggest he really doesn’t think Tkachuk is that impressive as a player.
If Doughty still believes all of those previous comments, there’s no way he thinks Matthew Tkachuk would make team Canada - let alone the weaker argument for Brady.
The way the tournament is going, Team Canada and USA wouldn’t meet until the Gold Medal game. For the sake of hockey and wanting the best teams to match up against each other, everyone wants to see it happen.
