The Edmonton Oilers' worst contract in the team is Darnell Nurse's deal, which has frequently landed him in trade talks - but now he's taken a step that's caught attention.
So far this offseason, the Oilers seem primarily motivated to shed some salary and create more flexibility to add at different positions of the roster.
Clearing Nurse's $9.25M may be the best the Oilers could do.
Darnell Nurse has no mention of Oilers in social media bio, prompting trade rumours
UPDATE: Jesse Courville-Lynch of the Hockey Writers, who initially shared the info of Nurse making the change, has now retracted his report. That being said, there's still a possibility of moving Nurse.
At the end of the day, it's just a social media bio - so it's not close to the most meaningful barometer for change. However, Nurse apparently removed mention of being an Edmonton Oilers' defenceman in his bio, and turned off the comments on recent posts.
More interestingly, this comes after insider Bob Stauffer hinted today on OilersNow that there could be a major move in the works for Edmonton that comes about tomorrow. Offloading Nurse's $9.25 would certainly be a major move.
Former NHLer Jordan Schmaltz has also relayed a belief that Nurse could be moved in the coming days.
The trade rumours for Nurse have persisted after yet another weak playoffs with the Oilers. He played much better through the regular season, but again come the playoffs and especially the Cup Final, Nurse's decision making abilities disappeared. Against Florida, Nurse has a full highlight reel of poor icings.
If the Oilers want to take the next step to truly be a complete team serious about winning, they can't have negative value deals on the roster like Nurse.
From what he's shown since signing the deal, he's more of a number 4-5 defenceman - not one that should be paid the same as
Cale Makar.
If the Oilers do find a way to convince Nurse to waive his no-move clause, it could be a great way for the team to free up cap space. It may even be addition by subtraction.
