Concerns on Connor McDavid's contract talks answered by top NHL insider

The Edmonton Oilers biggest piece of offseason business will be re-signing Connor McDavid, but the process hasn't begun at all yet.
Recent reports from NHL insiders indicate that McDavdi and the Oilers will get together for an extension near August 28th, at the conclusion of Team Canada's Olympic orientation camp in Calgary. For now though, there's been no progress on a deal.

NHL insider Frank Seravalli recently addressed the progress between McDavid and the Oilers, but shockingly said that specific terms of the deal haven't even been discussed yet.
People in Edmonton, Alberta are nervous. Should they be? I don't think so.
My understanding is that numbers haven't even been exchanged yet. They're still kind of very early-on in the process. And yet, there doesn't seem to be any hint of nerves, or panic, or fear from either the Oilers side and also the McDavid side.
I'd expect in relatively short order here, within a week or two, that process will begin to ramp up.

While it is a bit nerve-inducing that the two parties haven't spoken yet, the reality is that there will be no negotiations with McDavid. Whatever terms he's willing to re-sign for, the Oilers will gladly meet to keep the best player in hockey.
There's been more recent reports that McDavid may increase his salary more than expected, but mostly due to the rapidly increasing salary cap. Either way, the Oilers would be prepared to pay him the NHL's maximum allowable salary.
Whenever McDavid returns to Edmonton for the season and is ready to sign on the dotted line, the deal will be completed. For now, there's ultimate confidence on every side that McDavid will re-up in Edmonton.
