Buffalo Sabres goalie might request trade, Oilers should be interested

NHL insiders have recently cooled off the idea of the Oilers trading for a goalie this season, but it still remains the position that needs an upgrade the most. If there's a new goalie on the market, they should be interested - and Luukkonen has some promise.

According to new reports from NHL insiders, Luukkonen is looking for more playing time this year in a crowded Sabres crease. They have Luukkonen, Alex Lyon, Colten Ellis, and Devon Levi as NHL ready goalies.

Luukkonen's been just average in 8 games this season, posting an .899 save percentage. He struggled last season on a brutal Sabres team too, but has also shown some elite metrics that suggest he's better than his raw numbers.

His name has come up in trade talks earlier as well, being one of the more promising players on a Sabres team usually in the basement of the NHL.

The 26 year old goalie is also signed to an affordable contract of only $4.375M until the 2028-29 season, a deal the Oilers could easily accommodate. At 6'5 tall too, he fits the modern NHL mold of gigantic goalies.

At the end of the day, the Oilers currently have 2 goaltenders they can't trust to roll out for 7 games of a playoff series. In a must-win season where McDavid after given the team a major discount, they need to pursue all avenues to improve their team - and that needs to start with the goaltending.

Luukkonen is just one option the Oilers should be investigating, but a move still must happen.
