The Edmonton Oilers are facing a salary cap problem and some are pointing fingers at the current GM, Ken Holland.

Holland is responsible for constructing the current roster and recently gave an extension to Darnell Nurse for the 2022-2023 season. Although Nurse is one of the team's better defensemen, the allocation of the salary cap has negatively affected the team's future.

The #Senators 🇨🇦 have signed forward Vladimir Tarasenko (@vt9191) 🇷🇺 to a one-year deal worth $5M AAV.

Tarasenko, 31, had 18 goals, 50 points through 69 games played with St. Louis and New York last season.

Meanwhile, the Ottawa Senators have announced the signing of Vladimir Tarasenko to a one-year contract with an AAV of $5 million.

This is surprising considering Tarasenko previously expressed that he did not want to play in Ottawa. However, due to the Oilers' cap constraints, they missed out on the opportunity to add another depth scorer for the post-season.

Holland now has only $5.6 million left to sign other free agents.

The decisions made by Holland and Nurse have harmed Edmonton's long-term capabilities and potential for cup contention, resulting in missed opportunities to acquire big names like Tarasenko.

In the previous NHL season, Tarasenko played 69 games, scoring 18 goals and 32 assists for a total of 50 points. Any team could benefit from that kind of depth scoring.
