In the world of sports, there's something special about a redemption story. Jack Campbell, the goaltender for the Edmonton Oilers, is on the verge of creating one. The stage is set for the 2023-24 NHL season, and as the Oilers prepare to face the Vancouver Canucks in their season opener, it's become clear that Campbell will be the starting goalie.

Last season, Campbell had the honor of being Edmonton's opening-night netminder. He even led his team to a 5-3 victory with an impressive performance, stopping 33 of 36 shots. However, the rest of the season didn't pan out as everyone had hoped. Campbell struggled, managing only an .888 save percentage over 36 games. Not quite the storybook season he had envisioned.
But then came the preseason, and it was like a breath of fresh air for Campbell. In three preseason games, he showcased a remarkable .971 save percentage and a jaw-dropping 0.99 goals-against average. The change was palpable. When asked about it, Campbell credited some offseason adjustments that had him feeling more at ease.
In his own words, he explained,
"[I feel] significantly more comfortable... I've been kind of in need of change over the years, and it was just time, and I'm just feeling really good and really happy to be back here taking the ice with the guys."

The newfound confidence was evident in his game, particularly in making saves he should. Campbell was now focused on controlling rebounds and ensuring the Oilers were in a strong position.
However, it's essential to remember that Campbell's start in the season opener doesn't necessarily mean he'll be the workhorse throughout the season. The Oilers have a plan to share the workload, with Stuart Skinner also set to take his turn in the crease.
The idea is to go with the goalie who's in top form at any given time, a strategy that's crucial for the Oilers' quest to secure the best record in the Western Conference and gain home-ice advantage in the playoffs.
