Two Oilers' forwards fight over top-line role with Connor McDavid

Despite playing on the team's top-lines this season, Mangiapane has not produced as was expected when he was signed as a top-free agent, banking on the hope that he'd get back to playing like he did in Calgary.
Free agent not giving Edmonton fair-value on contract
After 18-games, Andrew has 4G and 2A only, and is a minus-11 in goal differential. Critics like Shayna Goldman of The Athletic have called-out his performance and contract, suggesting 'he hasn't been pulling his weight'.
In fact, given Bouchard's and Nurse's benching recently, and how they've both responded to the sanction, it's possible that Mangiapane will also be benched soon.
Coach's will use whatever tool is at their disposal, and short of being scratched altogether, missing a few shifts may be in order for Mangiapane.
Conversely, one of the Oilers' bright spots recently has been 21-year old rookie Matt Savoie. Though he is waiver-exempt, it's unlikely he will be assigned to Bakersfield when Zach Hyman is activated from injury.
Savoie is proving to be a valuable two-way player with offensive skills. On Wednesday night versus the Philadelphia Flyers, Matt assisted on both Edmonton goals in a much-needed OT win.
In the time he's played with McDavid this year, Savoie has earned the coach's trust. Over the last two games, his line has outshot opponents 12-4.
This is precisely the time to give Savoie more ice-time and a greater role on the team, and build his confidence. It will benefit the prospect's development quite nicely.
