According to a recent NHL ranking, the Edmonton Oilers' roster is projected to be the best in the NHL in 2025-26.
Although Oilers' GM Stan Bowman has inherited some of the current roster players, the addition and subtractions he has made have made his roster highly competitive, with the usual suspects leading the way.
McDavid and Draisaitl top a first-rated NHL offense
In fact,
Zach Hyman was rated among the best overall players at his role also, ranking in the 98th percentile, with McDavid in the 99th percentile, and Draisaitl a perfect 100th.
It's important to note, however, that the rankings include offensive and defensive proficiencies, with the role percentile as the net of the two. With that in mind,
Adam Henrique's role percentile was 96th and
Trent Frederic 93rd.
Evan Bouchard rated in the 88th role percentile, though the lower defensive number is accounted for by a higher offensive efficiency, given his higher point total.
The Oilers' goalies ranked 27th overall in their roles, with
Stuart Skinner at 35th and
Calvin Pickard at 18th, numbers that are worrisome, given the fact that the Oilers are contending for a Stanley Cup this year.
GM Stan Bowman has done a good job this offseason of constructing a solid lineup, with the perfect role players and complimentary positions for McDavid and Draisaitl.
At some point on the season, Knoblauch will play the two stars on separate lines, making the recent acquisitions all the more valuable to the club.
