It seems that analyst Jason Gregor has been impressed with David Tomasek's play this offseason, and even more so with the talented forward's role on the 1st-powerplay unit.

David Tomasek slips seamlessly into Oilers' top powerplay unit

In a post-game interview, Tomasek was asked how he's finding his role of the powerplay:
«Just trying to ask what the guys need, work with the coaches, try and be available. I'm happy we were able to score one in the second (Draisaitl) - on a different look. A different set up.»

David's contribution on the team generally, and specifically on the PP, will be looked at closely, given Zach Hyman's absence due to injury, though the former did not disappoint last night against the Canucks.
Tomasek set up Kapanen's goal and looks like he'll be part of things as the season opens. He's playing Zach Hyman's spot down low on the power play, and was robbed by Vancouver's goalie Thatcher Demko on a redirect off a pass from McDavid.
The Oilers came out slowly against the Canucks, and didn't quite find their grade-A game the rest of the way. It will be imperative for the Oilers to start the season on a winning note, given the team's slow starts in the last two seasons.
If they hope to win the Pacific and gain home-ice advantage in the playoffs, all units will need to play to expectation, and beyond. Having Tomasek playing well will go a long way towards that end, and if the preseason is an indication, he looks ready to do just that.
Tomasek spoke post-game on finishing his first pre-season with the Oilers:
«I'm looking forward to it. It was obviously a long pre-season, but I'm happy I got those games. I needed that, and I thought today was another decent performance. I'm trying to get better each game and just improve and get used to everything, but you need games to improve and I'll just keep on working. I think everyone's excited about Wednesday.»

Is David Tomasek a good replacement for Hyman on the Oilers' 1st powerplay-unit?
