A recent report by The Athletic's Allan Mitchell claims there is no downside to the Oilers signing Connor McDavid to an 8-year contract extension.

With one-year remaining on his $12.5M AAV deal, there has been much speculation about when the Captain will sign, and for how long; the value is almost incidental at this point.
Analyst claims even with an 8-year extension, there is no risk of a decline in McDavid's talent level.
Yet, at 28-years old, the question of any player, especially where superstars are concerned, is when will his production take a dip. This is the very question that Oilers GM Stan Bowman is asking himself, as he prepares to negotiate with his team's primary asset.
Sydney Crosby is perhaps the best comparable, who at 38-years old is still producing at elite levels, having scored 91, 94, and 93 points respectively in his last three seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins, the only team with which he's played.
Though Crosby was 29 when he won his last cup in 2016-17, with the right supporting cast, he very easily may have won well into his 30's. This is the position in which Connor finds himself, at his peak and supported by other superstars.
Speaking about Connor moving forward, Allan Mitchell argues that fears of declining skills 'don't hold up when it comes to Connor McDavid.'
Given that Connor is supported by the strongest supporting cast of his career, McDavid's dominance is expected to continue well into his his 30's. And even if his point production were to decline, his talent certainly won't.
Even at the age of 30, and beyond, McDavid is expected to be an elite player. The Oilers window for winning a Stanley Cup with him at the helm is about four years, or more.
Speaking about McDavid's extension, Allan Mitchell had this to say:
"That inevitability means an eight-year deal is far more likely to secure a decade of brilliance... Instead of worrying about regression, Oilers fans should see such a contract as great news-a commitment that ensures the NHL's most dominant player remains in Edmonton through his prime and beyond.
