When you're considered a generational talent, there will never be a shortage of speculation around 'what if' scenarios, especially when it concerns Connor McDavid and Auston Mathews, their respective team's Captain and best player.

Leaf fans eager to have Connor McDavid play with Auston Matthews

We got a sampling of that hyper-speculation in the months leading up to McDavid's contract extension, when fans of the Leafs dreamt of Connor joining Auston in Toronto, and with speculation gaining momentum with each day Connor remained unsigned.
Of course, McDavid did sign an extension with Edmonton, but for two years only, not enough to quiet the die-hard Leaf fans from continuing to imagine a McDavid-Matthews duo in Toronto.
And given that McDavid's two-year extension expires after the same year that Matthews' current $13.25-million deal expires (2027-28), both have the chance to enter unrestricted free agency using the same agent.
Both are represented by Wasserman's Judd Moldaver, who joined Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman and Kyle Bukaskas on the 32 Thoughts podcast, where the agents were asked the question on all Leafs' fan's mind.
«I know it's a two-way street when they're competing against each other, either international or in (NHL) games. It's all about winning,» he said of McDavid and Matthews, specifically. «That's just too far in the future. You know, it so happens, I guess, that they're all UFA the same summer. What the future holds, I don't know.»

«I think I can clearly say for all three of them [McDavid, Matthews, Werenski]: they love their organizations, the Leafs, the Jackets, the Oilers, respectively,» Moldaver said. «And for them it's winning where they're at and in all three cases have only played for one organization."

The key to any player wanting to remain with a franchise is to win with that team. Conversely, nothing loses top-players more that a losing franchise, as is the case with Buffalo, who risk losing key-players because of a losing culture.
«And if they can continue on in a good light there," the agent continued, speaking of Connor and Auston, "and have a chance to win, hopefully they all stay where they are. I think that's sort of the easy target that they're all UFAs the same summer, I guess an interesting scenario. But what the future holds, I don't know.»
