The Edmonton Oilers have a quality new goalie target in Connor Ingram, but some assets will need to depart their current roster.
Edmonton Oilers would need to subtract players to get under salary cap if they acquire Ingram
Ingram is under contract for the upcoming season at $1.95M, but the Oilers can't even afford to fit the relatively cheap deal. According to PuckPedia, the Oilers have just $225K in cap space.
If the Oilers were to acquire Ingram, other players would need to depart their current roster to clear space. The two prime candidates would be
Calvin Pickard and Mattias Janmark - who could be traded or waived. In Janmark's case, he's already falling out of the lineup.
Edmonton Oilers should take a chance on Connor Ingram
Now 28 years old, Connor Ingram has posted some quality results in the NHL. His career best season came in 2023-24 where he made 50 starts with the Coyotes at a .907 save percentage.
Last season was a down year statistically with an .882, but Ingram entered the NHL player assistance program after losing his mother to cancer. There's reason to believe he can bounce back to previous great results with a fresh start.
Not only that, but Ingram has played under Coach Kris Knobaluch, and they're from the same small town in Saskatchewan.
If the Oilers see the promise of Ingram and believe he could be a solid 1B option for Skinner and a potential playoff starter, the team should make the move before training camp and finally solidify the crease.
