Oilers trade idea pitched to acquire elite goalie prospect from Detroit Red Wings
The Edmonton Oilers are in dire need of an upgrade at the goalie position, and one insider has linked to team to trading for Sebastian Cossa of the Detroit Red Wings.
Trade pitch surfaces to send Sebastian Cossa to the Edmonton Oilers
The Red Wings already have a strong tandem of veteran goaltenders with
John Gibson and Cam Talbot, but also have elite local goalie prospect Trey Augustine making waves as their goalie of the future. That likely makes Sebastian Cossa expendable for the Wings.
Drafted 15th overall by Detroit in 2021, Cossa has had sustained success with the Red Wings AHL team in the last two seasons posting a .912 save percentage in his last 81 games. At 6'6 tall and now 22 years old, Cossa looks ready to make the jump to the NHL.
Unfortunately, it would take the Oilers some substantial assets to acquire Cossa - which would entail giving up roster players like Podkolzin and Kulak.
This trade would give Detroit a promising young NHL player and a veteran defenceman to stabilize their blue line. Even if Edmonton had to add another draft pick, this deal would make sense for the both teams.
If the Oilers believe that the former Oil King Cossa can live up to his ceiling as an elite starting goalie, this trade could be one that finally stabilizes the crease in Edmonton for the foreseeable future.
