When an NHL player puts on his team's jersey, you can rest assured it means something; he wears it proudly, knowing that all who came before battled for the crest on the front, and not the name on the back. It means you're part of something greater than yourself.
Having said this, it has been reported that the Oilers will debut a new alternate jersey in 2025-26, though the organization has not commented about its details, not a hint of what it will look like.
However, according to many, Edmonton Sports Talk's Tom Gazzola has his ear to the ground, and is the most likely to know something about the new alternate. In fact, he is the only media member to share information on the topic.
In the last two seasons, the Oilers have gone the entire season without a third-jersey, since Fanatics replaced Adidas as the NHL's jersey manufacturer. Prior, Edmonton used the Adidas navy/orange sweater as their alternate. They had used a 'special jersey' for select events, but promptly retired it.
Yet, Gazzola , on an episode of Oil Stream revealed the jersey will feature the traditional Oilers' colors of orange, blue and white, and won't include the oil drop meaning the iconic logo will be absent.
Instead, he alluded that the base jersey color will be white, and may feature an Oilers' word-mark as its main crest.
"I've seen it," Gazzola said. "I've seen the whole uniform. This is the traditional colors, but a whole new look."
With training camp set to get under way in about a month, we may see a team post on social media, or hear about the new alternate jersey at a media availability. Or we'll just have to wait for the season to begin.
The classic Oilers' color-combo is one of the NHL's most visually appealing. The new third-jersey will be no different, and will be worn with like-pride, whatever its design.
