The Edmonton Oilers are expected to cut multiple roster players after the surprise late signing of free agent Jack Roslovic.
Edmonton Oilers will require multiple roster moves to add Jack Roslovic to roster
Roslovic signed a bargain deal in Edmonton for just 1 year at $1.5M. According to PuckPedia, the Oilers now have just $326K in salary cap space, and that's already with
Zach Hyman on LTIR.
When Hyman returns, the Oilers will need to clear $2.8M in salary cap space - which will likely be multiple players being sent down to the AHL.
The clear candidates for the Oilers to cut are
Troy Stecher,
Curtis Lazar, and Mattias Janmark. These players could be sent to the AHL, or traded to gain even more cap space.
The emergence of
Alec Regula has caused a logjam at the 3RHD position, and Mattias Janmark looks to have lost his 4th line role to more skilled players. Lazar is a depth forward, who could potentially clear waivers.
For the immediate future, the Oilers will only need to make one move to clear space for Roslovic. When Hyman returns though, there will be more tough decisions.
For now, it's still not exactly known when Roslovic will be joining the Oilers. He's missed all of training camp, but kept up skating. He could be briefly moved to non-active status, but Coach Knoblauch expects him to quickly join the team.
It's extremely interesting to see the Oilers add a 22-goal scorer to a value contract as the season starts. Hopefully he'll be able to hit the ground running, and prove why he deserves to stay in the NHL.
