In a recent podcast of Oilersnation: Real Life, the hosts discussed the circumstances surrounding a possible trade for a goalie upgrade in Edmonton.
Time running-out for Oilers' general manager to acquire goaltender
"You can get Saros in July. You just gotta wait. There is one name who works for this year and still allows you to get Saros: Cam Talbot. David Pagnotta says he could be available," said one of the hosts.
You don't have to trade Skinner to get Talbot...$2.5M and is a free agent at the end of the year."
Though we are less than 20 games into the NHL season, opportunities for a goalie trade may be wearing thin for Edmonton, in particular given the GM's slow approach at the plate.
Granted, cap space is also a hindrance to signing a goalie with any weight behind him, but not impossible. Reports continue to surface referencing
Juuse Saros' name with the Oilers. However, nothing concrete has been confirmed as yet.
So it may just take some familiarity with the incoming goalie to convince Stan Bowman to finally do the deal; Cam Talbot has that as well as past success in Edmonton.
In the 4-years he played with the Oilers, over 227 games, Talbot's record was104-95-19, with a 2.83 GAA and .909 SV%. Strong numbers, especially by today's standards.
The average GAA for a goalie in 2025-26 is 3.10, and the average save percentage is .899.
With a $2.5M cap hit, making a deal with Detroit for Talbot is viable; Edmonton would have to make marginal trades for cap space, which they need to do anyways when players return to the lineup from the injury.
