The Edmonton Oilers goaltending has been seriously unreliable this season, but fans may have some hope for a new goalie in the organization as Samuel Jonsson has just won goalie of the year award.
Oilers goalie prospect Samuel Jonsson wins award for goalie of the year in Swedish league
According to a new release from the Hockey Allsvenskan, Jonsson has been awarded the league's goalie of the year award for his 24 games of work with Bofors IK.
After a season to remember Samuel Jonsson wins Goalkeeper of the Year 2025!
- Hockey Allsvenskan
The Oilers selected the Swedish goaltender back in the 5th round of the 2022 draft. Jonsson had a fantastic season well deserving of the award, posting .922 save percentage, a 1.88 GAA, a 17-6 record, and 6 shutouts.
Since his draft year, Jonsson's remained in the second level Swedish league, but he's also sprouted to a height of 6'5 and 201 pounds - up 2 inches and 15 pounds since h draft year too.
With these incredible results and his growth spurt since the draft year, there's some promise that Jonsson could become an NHL starting goalie. He'll have to begin with the jump to the division 1 Swedish league, and the Oilers will be carefully monitoring his progress in that jump.
The Oilers are in a desperate need for a true starting goaltender to take the reins in Edmonton, and hopefully, they have one cooking in the system with Jonsson.
