The Edmonton Oilers have been linked to a trade for Columbus Blue Jackets forward Yegor Chinakov.
Reports surfaced this offseason that Chinakov was looking for a trade out of Columbus to get more ice time. However, Chinakov recently said at training camp he'd be open to staying with the Blue Jackets - perhaps conditionally on ice time.
New trade rumour links Oilers to another trade for high-end NHL ready prospect
However, according to new reports from Blue Jackets insiders, Chinakov does indeed want to move ahead with his trade request - with the Edmonton Oilers and Chicago Blackhawks listed as prime candidates to acquire him.
Drafted 21st overall by the Blue Jackets in 2020, Chinakov is now 24 years old and one of the higher-end young players on their roster. He broke into the NHL in the 2021-22 season, but has yet to fully live up to expectations.
Chinakov has shown some offensive talent, scoring 44 points in his last 83 games in middle-six minutes, but his 200-foot play hasn't been good enough for Coach Dean Evason. Down the stretch last season, Chinakov was a healthy scratch for Columbus - which sparked the trade request.
The Oilers have shown interest in these types of moves lately with the additions of
Matthew Savoie and Ike Howard. Edmonton needs more young talent with a high ceiling, and Chinakov fits that bill.
There will be multiple difficulties for the Oilers pursuing a Chinakov trade. There's no clear spot for him in the lineup, the Oilers would have to part with a decent asset, and fit in his $2.1M salary.
At this point, it seems unlikely the Oilers would make a trade for Chinakov. But if the team sees promise in the player and an opportunity to get him, maybe they can't pass it up.
