The Edmonton Oilers have a brand new goalie tandem this season, and they should be looking to keep in intact for next year with a contract extension for Connor Ingram.
The 28–year old Ingram is making an NHL comeback with the Oilers this season after struggling last year and missing time in the Player Assistance Program. He’s in Edmonton on a bargain cap hit of $733K, but it’s a deal that expires at the end of this season.
Carolina Hurricanes goalie contract serves as comparable for Connor Ingram
The Carolina Hurricanes have an emerging goalie in Brandon Bussi who just signed a 3-year contract extension with a $1.9M cap hit. This contract could serve as a salary comparable for Ingram, who should come in at a lower price.
Bussi ranks above Ingram in games played, save percentage, and goals saved above expected. He’s also slightly younger than Ingram.
For all of these reasons, Ingram should come in at a lower salary number also on a multi-year contract. Ingram himself may also be open to some term on his next contract after a tumultuous last few years in his career.
Currently Ingram has a .897 save percentage, but it was hovering above .900 until recently. He’s more than capable to serve as the backup to Tristan Jarry in the Oilers’ tandem moving forward, and the Oilers should sign him. By per 60 metrics, Ingram’s been just as good as Jarry with in Edmonton.
If they can get Ingram to agree to terms also on a 3-year contract around $1.5M or lower, the Oilers should jump at the chance. That’s a manageable price for a solid tandem goalie.
