An Edmonton Oilers longshot draft pick in Dalyn Wakely is starting to emerge as a steal, and now has been ranked among the team's top prospects.

Wakely was selected by the Oilers in the 6th round of the 2024 draft. He's a 6'1 right shot centreman from Port Hope, Ontario now 21 years old.

Dalyn Wakely ranked as Oilers 8th best prospect

Analysts at OilersNation have now ranked Dalyn Wakely as the team's 8th best prospect currently. Referencing a scouting report from Elite Prospects, Wakely is a two-way player who brings energy to the team with his tough style of play.
Every team needs players like Wakely. He battles for pucks mercilessly, takes hits to make plays, and dishes out even more punishment than he takes. Around the net, he digs for pucks and creates space for his teammates by engaging as many defenders as possible. Along the boards, he throws reverse hits, rolls with contact, and attacks the middle.

Wakely had an incredible season in 2023-24, scoring 104 points in 66 games for the North Bay Battalion. After a trade to the Barrie Colts last season, his production took a hit and dropped to just 58 points in 55 games - but he played on a much less offensive team.
However, Wakely still moved up in the prospect rankings from last year. Previously ranked the 14th best Oilers prospect, expert Bruce Curlock was high on his «greasy» game.
Wakely is a greasy player who doesn't take any shortcuts in any area of the ice. He takes hits to make plays and he plays hard through the middle of the ice.

If Wakely can prove that last season was a breakout and not an anomaly, the Oilers will have themselves a very good, very greasy right-shot center prospect.

Now headed to play next season in the NCAA, if Wakely impresses he'll be in a good position to earn an Oilers contract.
If he can out the skills together, there should be high hopes for his hard-nosed playstyle translating well to the NHL. At the moment, he's exceeding expectations for a 6th round pick.
